It occurred in Tupambaé and was raised in the Departmental Board
For several years, in La Pedrera and neighboring areas, including the city of Melo, the effects of repeated fires have been felt in the Landfill where household waste from practically the entire department is deposited.
In the last ordinary session of 2025 of the Departmental Board, a similar situation arose that worried residents and that occurred during the first days of last month, in this specific case in an inland town.
“In a meeting with residents of the town of Tupambaé, they told me a series of worrying events that have been occurring for many years” manifested Javier Marquez.
“In recent days, residents have been seriously affected by a situation that originated in the local waste dump.” reported. “Said landfill caught fire during the first days of December and remained in this situation for several days, generating intense smoke emanation that directly affected the population throughout that period” assured the Mayor of the National Party.
“This landfill is located approximately 100 meters from the beginning of the urban area, bordering the soccer stadium and an area intended for recreational activities, which shows a location that is clearly incompatible with the orderly growth and development of a locality.” established Márquez during his exhibition.
“Added to this episode is a problem that has been going on for many years: permanent bad odors, proliferation of flies, presence of loose animals, waste scattered on neighbors’ properties and irregular deposit of dead animals, both cattle and sheep.” detailed the departmental legislator. “This creates an environmental and health situation that requires an immediate response from the State.” broad.
“The neighbors request that until the definitive transfer of this landfill is completed, which should be the central objective of public policy in this matter, urgent transitional measures be implemented to mitigate the current negative impacts and provide minimum guarantees of health and coexistence.” Javier Márquez ended up saying.
