Chamber of Deputies leaves the labor reform project for the next legislature

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Chamber of Deputies postponed this Friday the knowledge of the reform of the Labor Code for the next ordinary legislature, due to disagreements between the business sectors and laboral.

The information was offered by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, who stated that the next legislature will be decisive for the approval of the bill that modifies the Labor Code.

During a press conference in the National Congress, Pacheco clarified that the project does not expire with the closure of the current legislature and explained that the initiative has already passed important stages of the legislative process: it was approved in two readings in the Senate and in one in the Chamber of Deputies, so only one discussion remains for its final approval.

“The Labor Code project is an organic law, therefore it requires a special majority, and that is why we have privileged consultation,” he said.

He indicated that Congress has chosen to give space to dialogue between the sectors involved, but warned that this process has a limit.

“We understand that the next legislature must now be the final deadline, and that, if the agreement is not reached, Congress will have to fulfill its role and decide according to the majority that is configured in the Chamber,” he expressed.

The president of the Chamber denied that there is a paralysis of the project due to pressure from some sector and explained that both the unions and the business community have presented observations.

“The unions want important modifications here in the Chamber and the business community also has proposals. We have evaluated whether both parties would be dissatisfied if we do not mature this project a little more,” he said.

He reiterated that unemployment is not part of the issues in controversy within Congress. “In this Congress, no party agrees to address unemployment, which is why it is not a topic of discussion,” he stated.
