Italy’s Prime Minister Giogia Meloni said her government continues to work for the release of humanitarian aid worker Alberto Trentini. “The Government has been dealing with this matter for 400 days (…) We will not stop dealing with it until Trentini’s mother can hug her son”
The Government of Italy confirmed this Friday morning the release of the Italian businessman Luigi Gasperin, who was detained for just over three months in an unknown location.
Gasperin, 70 years old, was arrested in August 2025 after the raid on the main office of the Técnica Petrolera WLP company, located in Maturín, Monagas state, of which he is the owner. He was accused of alleged possession and use of explosive material, related to an attempted attack reported by the authorities.
Gasperin’s release joins that of the journalist and national leader of Convergencia, Biagio Pilieri, who had been detained in the Sebin Helicoide since August 29, 2024, after participating in a demonstration called by the opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Another Italian citizen, humanitarian worker Alberto Trentini, has not been released from El Rodeo I. He was detained on November 15, 2024, allegedly at a checkpoint while traveling from Caracas to Guasdualito (Apure), according to his relatives.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giogia Meloni said her government continues to work for Trentini’s release. “The Government has been dealing with this matter for 400 days (…) We will not stop dealing with it until Trentini’s mother can hug her son,” he stated.
The prime minister recalled that there are more Italian citizens detained in Venezuela, although she did not offer an exact number. Likewise, he considered this release of political prisoners as a sign “of great value” for the pacification by Delcy Rodríguez and hopes that the process continues “with more steps in the same direction.”
“I welcome the signal given by President Delcy Rodríguez as of great value, unilateral and that goes in the direction of the pacification of the country,” said the Italian president in her traditional press conference at the beginning of the year.
Meloni, a recognized European ally of US President Donald Trump, added that Caracas’ decision favors “the definition of new and different relations between Italy and Venezuela.”
Asked about her assessment of the situation in Venezuela, the Italian Prime Minister expressed that “people are not aware, or pretend not to see, the reality in which the Venezuelan people find themselves,” highlighting the low salaries and “generalized poverty,” although she acknowledged “the hope that the situation can improve with President Rodríguez.”
