Santo Domingo.- With a single cry for justice, the preliminary trial of the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, accused of being the culprits of the collapse of the roof of the Jet Sert nightclub, which occurred on January 8, 2025, begins on Monday in the First Court of Instruction of the National District, an event in which 236 people died and more than 180 were injured.
Raymundo Mejía will be the judge who will be responsible for determining whether there are merits to send the accused to a substantive judgment or if, on the contrary, an order of no favor is issued.
Yesterday they were fulfilled nine months of the tragic event that shocked the population and that is considered the most devastating in the recent history of the Dominican Republic.
Like every month, relatives of the victims went to the scene to light candles, pray and bring flowers, in memory of the victims.

At the site of the tragedy, a mass was celebrated by Father Marino Alcántara Alcantara, of the Padre Montesinos archdiocese, who said in the homily that justice continues to be askedbut it seems that she is not blind, that she has sight and that she is very selective.

The priest Alcántara Alcántara assured that in the midst of the event, the Dominican justice system remains stubborn and distracted in pursuing the “negotiations with those who stole the country’s money.”
“With politicians from the traditional parties of the system to negotiate with them for the billions that you stole, how many millions are you going to return? Three or four? And then based on that, impunity is occurring,” he expressed.
Likewise, he assured that the tragedy that occurred on April 8 of last year, which claimed the lives of more than 230 people and injured more than 180, after the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed, “has been left aside” by the authorities and is not in the interest of justice.
