Home gas supply suspended in Catatumbo due to threats from armed groups

They suspend the gas supply in Tibú due to threats from armed groups, affecting more than 20,000 families and worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The humanitarian crisis that is registered in the Catatumbo region not only generates displacements and confinements due to the clashes armed groupsbut also the suspension of various social activities and basic services for the communities.

Suspension of gas supply

The home gas service in several municipalities of Catatumbo was interrupted in the municipality of Tibú, due to pressure exerted by armed actors present in the area.

The company Proviservicios, responsible for supplying gas to thousands of families in Tibuannounced the suspension of its activities after receiving threats from the FARC dissidents. Management reported that members of the 33rd Front ordered the suspension of production, apparently due to non-compliance with extortion payments, seriously affecting the communities.

“Two people who identified themselves to our officials as members of the 33rd Front of the FARC showed up at our facilities. The purpose of the visit was to inform that the Work had to be carried out only until 9:30 am on January 5, and that subsequently we had to proceed to the immediate closure of the facilities and the interruption of our activities in the municipality,” the company indicated.

The company added that on January 6, new communications were received expressly prohibiting the execution of any operational activity, preventing the normal development of work and compromising the safety of personnel.

Given this situation, Proviservicios confirmed the temporary suspension of home gas service starting January 6, 2026, affecting more than 20,000 users in Tibú, who depend on the supply for their daily activities.

Clashes between illegal armed groups continue in the region, increasing the displacement of inhabitants and aggravating the humanitarian emergency in Catatumbo.
