“Maduro fell, come for Canel”, message that circulates in Havana after Ferrer’s call

The opposition leader maintains that citizens responded to his call with visible expressions, including graffiti in public spaces.

MADRID, Spain.- The opposition leader Cuban José Daniel Ferrer called on the island’s population to publicly express their rejection of the Cuban political system and to demand fundamental freedoms and rights, through graffiti, posters, stickers and leaflets.

In one publication spread this Thursday on their social networksFerrer assured that, since the morning of Saturday, January 3, he began to receive communications from Cuba in which, as he said, many people stated “that the vast majority of the population was very happy, very happy with the action against the Chavista regime,” after the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by United States special forces. According to his words, some of those messages included the question “and when are they coming for Canel?”, in reference to Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Based on these reactions, the opponent stated that he decided to invite citizens who want “tyranny to fall,” who “want to live in freedom” and who aspire “to have their rights as human beings respected,” to express their opinions visibly in public spaces. In this context, he encouraged them to demonstrate through “graffiti, posters, stickers and leaflets” to express what they feel and what they think.

Ferrer repeatedly urged those who support different demands to express them publicly: “Do you want freedom and democracy? Express it. Are you in favor of the Cuba Decide citizen campaign? Express it. Are you in favor of respecting human rights? Express it. Are you in favor of the freedom of political prisoners? Express it.”

Likewise, he mentioned the possibility of demanding actions against the Cuban leaders, stating: “Do you want the US special forces to go after Canel, like the US army forces were in 1898 to support the mambises? Express it. Do you want them to arrest Raúl Castro, Canel and the gang? Express it, say it.”

After that call, he began to receive images of graffiti that appeared in different parts of Havana, including some in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, “a few meters from the Plaza Cívica José Martí.” As he described, those messages also read: “Maduro has fallen, come for Canel.”

In his publication, the opponent stated that asking for actions against the Cuban leaders “is not bad, it is very good” if that is the feeling of the majority, although he insisted that the fight for freedom must continue. In that sense, he cited a phrase by José Martí: “freedom is very expensive and you have to decide to buy it for its price or resign yourself to living without it.”

The message concludes with a call to maintain the daily mobilization “every day with more strength, every day more committed” to make possible “the Cuba with everyone and for the good of all dreamed of by Martí,” and ends by calling for “freedom for political prisoners” and for “tyranny” to fall.
