Immigration agent shoots and kills woman in Minneapolis, USA

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed today (7) that a woman was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a confrontation between federal agents and protesters in south Minneapolis, according to information from the Minnesota Star Tribune. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said agents “were conducting targeted operations” when members of the community began trying to block the vehicles. She said the Immigration agent “fired defensive shots” when the woman tried to run over the agents.

Several area residents who witnessed the scene said officers were ordering the woman out of the vehicle. A video posted on social media showed the vehicle reversing before accelerating toward an officer, who fired shots at close range.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for calm and said the Trump administration’s “recklessness cost someone their life.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the dead woman was 37 years old. “To the family, I’m sorry,” said Frey, disputing the Department of Homeland Security’s version that she had tried to run over the agents.

“Immigration agents are causing chaos in our city,” he said. “We demand that ICE leave the city and state immediately. We stand with the immigrant and refugee communities.”

On a social network, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that the agent acted in self-defense. According to him, images from the episode indicate that the driver tried to run over the agent in a “violent” and “deliberate” way.

On Tuesday (6), the Department of National Security began a major migration offensive in the region. Around 2,000 agents and officers were scheduled to participate in the operation, which is linked, in part, to investigations into alleged fraud involving residents of Somali origin.
