MADRID, Spain.- Fernando Báez Hidalgo, 26 years old and a native of the municipality of Río Cauto, in the province of Granma, was identified as one of the 32 Cubans killed in Venezuela during the US military operation that culminated with the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro.

The identification of Báez Hidalgo has been disseminated through digital media and platforms, as well as by testimonies from family members, who confirmed that he was an only child and that his family resides in Río Cauto. According to these versions, the young man was carrying out security duties in Venezuela at the time of the events.

According to information previously published by the international press and confirmed by the Cuban Government, the 32 deceased They belonged to the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) and were deployed in Venezuela as part of the bilateral cooperation between Havana and Caracas. Cuban authorities indicated that the soldiers died during “combative actions” in the context of the US operation.

The Government of Cuba has not officially disclosed the complete list of those who died, nor individual details about their specific functions. However, independent media have indicated that several of the dead Cubans were part of the Venezuelan president’s security ring, which reinforces the complaints about the direct participation of Cuban personnel in the protection of the Maduro regime.

After learning the death toll, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared two days of national mourning, without offering additional public information about the identities of the victims.

The case of Fernando Báez Hidalgo has generated mixed reactions on social networks, where while official media and journalists sympathetic to the regime present him as a “hero”, users denounce that young Cubans die outside the country carrying out military missions in the service of a foreign regime, in the midst of the deep economic and social crisis that the island is going through.
