Senate stops entry of US military into Mexico after attack on Venezuela

There were two exercises: one was the participation of the Mexican Navy in the event “Increase the Operational Capacity of the Special Operations Unit”, which would be held at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, from January 18 to March 13, 2026.

The Mexican Navy would participate with 60 troops from the Special Operations Unit, who would travel with tactical equipment and organic weapons, without ammunition, and their movement would be aboard a US Air Force C-130 “Hercules” military aircraft, which would take off on January 18 from the Toluca International Airport, State of Mexico.

The second was the entry into the national territory of Navy SEAL personnel and the United States Navy Special Forces Group to participate in the event “Improve the Capacity of Special Operations Forces”, which would take place from January 19 to April 15, 2026 at the Special Operations Unit Headquarters in Donato Guerra, State of Mexico; at the Marine Infantry Specialized Training Center, in Champotón, Campeche, and at the Naval Command of Ciudad del Carmen, in the same state.

Extraordinary period

Two weeks ago, the president of the Senate, Laura Itzel Castillo, reported that she would present an initiative to the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union to call an extraordinary period on January 13 in order to authorize the entry and exit of Mexican and American troops.

For this reason, on Wednesday, January 7, the proposal to call the extraordinary period was going to be discussed; while on January 5 it would be voted on by the Senate Navy Commission.

However, the session of the Navy Commission was canceled and so far the legislators have not said anything about it.

The decision is made after the Senate, headed by Morena, condemned the United States military intervention carried out in Venezuela, considering that this constitutes a violation of international law and the principles established in the Charter of the United Nations.

The president of the Upper House, Itzel Castillo Juárez, highlighted that Mexico has for years maintained a foreign policy based on the constitutional principles of non-intervention, the rejection of foreign interference, the self-determination of peoples and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
