Edmundo González demands the release of all political prisoners and respect for the will of #28Jul

Edmundo González

In a public statement, Edmundo González stated that the events of recent days “have marked a turning point in the recent history of the country,” although he warned that the new political scenario is not enough if fundamental rights are not guaranteed.

Edmundo González Urrutia demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all political, civil and military prisoners, and full respect for the popular will expressed on July 28, 2024, considering that these are essential requirements to begin a true democratic transition in Venezuela.

In a public statement, González stated that the events of recent days “have marked a turning point in the recent history of the country,” although he warned that the new political scenario is not enough if fundamental rights are not guaranteed.

“This moment constitutes an important step, but not enough. The real normalization of the country happens when all citizens deprived of their liberty for political reasons—true hostages of the regime—are released and the majority will expressed on July 28 is unambiguously respected,” he said.

“No transition is possible with political prisoners”

González maintained that, although whoever—in his words—“usurped power is no longer in the country and faces justice,” fundamental tasks persist that cannot be postponed. Among them, he described as unavoidable the release of all people imprisoned for political reasons.

“The immediate and unconditional release of political, civil and military prisoners, kidnapped for thinking differently, for demanding rights or for fulfilling their constitutional duty, is an essential condition. No democratic transition is possible as long as there is a single Venezuelan imprisoned unjustly,” he stated.

The leader assured that his position responds to an “exclusive” loyalty to the country, democracy, the rule of law and the dignity of citizens.

Claim popular legitimacy

By invoking article 5 of the Constitution, González stressed that its legitimacy comes from the popular mandate and the support of “millions of Venezuelans who long for a country with peace, institutions and a future.”

“This support is deep, majority and sustained. It will never be betrayed. We owe ourselves exclusively to the Venezuelans and their sovereign will,” he assured, insisting that the transition must be built with responsibility, a sense of State and national unity.

In this context, he called to promote a process of truth, justice and reconciliation, without impunity, that allows the reconstruction of the country and prevents power from being used again against citizens.

González also addressed a message to the National Armed Forces and the State forces, whom he asked to comply with the mandate expressed at the polls.

“As president of Venezuelans, I make a calm and clear call: your duty is to fulfill the sovereign mandate of July 28, 2024. Your loyalty is to the Constitution, to the people and to the Republic,” he expressed.

He described the moment as historic and assured that it must be assumed “with serenity, clarity and democratic commitment.” “The country that is coming must be one of rights, institutions and hope. We will build that country together,” he concluded.
