Peru calls for a prompt political solution in Venezuela and democratic transition after Maduro's capture

The Government of Peru issued an official statement this Saturday about the events that occurred during the early hours of the morning in Venezuela, which culminated in the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States.

In the document, the Peruvian Executive states its position on the principles of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations regarding the maintenance of peace, the preservation of security and the peaceful solution of international controversies.

The statement points out that transnational organized crime represents a serious threat to hemispheric security and the stability of the States in the region.

In that sense, the statement expresses concern about the organization and criminal actions of drug trafficking cartels in Venezuela.

The Peruvian government described Nicolás Maduro’s regime as “illegitimate” and accused it of violating the human rights of the Venezuelan people, subjecting them to torture, arbitrary and illegal detentions, and destroying the rule of law.

Furthermore, the document blames Chavismo for causing an unprecedented migration crisis in the region.

Call for democratic transition

The statement calls for a prompt solution to the political situation in Venezuela, in favor of a transition with full respect for international law and human rights.

The statement highlights the need to address the “legitimate and genuine aspirations of the Venezuelan people to live in democracy” with the support of the regional community.

On the other hand, the government indicated that it is monitoring the situation of the Peruvian community in Venezuela after the events of the early morning.

Until the time of the issuance of the statement, no incidents affecting fellow Peruvians in Venezuelan territory had been reported.
