Gustavo Petro announces plan on the border with Venezuela and responds after the capture of Nicolás Maduro

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petroannounced a set of special measures in the Colombian-Venezuelan border after the capture of Nicolás Maduroafter a military operation carried out by the United States in Caracas.

According to official information, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Floreswere detained and transferred out of Venezuela to face charges for narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine and weapons-related crimes before American justice.

Colombia rejects military intervention in Venezuela
After learning about the operation, President Petro rejected what he described as a aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin Americareiterating that internal conflicts must be resolved without foreign intervention.
“The principle of self-determination of people is the basis of the United Nations system. Conflicts must be resolved in peace and through dialogue,” said the Colombian president.

Security Council and border deployment
The head of state reported that early Saturday morning a national security councilwhere preventive actions were defined against a possible humanitarian and migratory impact in Colombia.

Among the measures announced is the deployment of public force on the borderthe strengthening of the State’s assistance capacity and the activation of protocols in the event of an eventual massive entry of Venezuelan refugees.
“The Colombian embassy in Venezuela is active and responding to requests for assistance from Colombian citizens,” Petro indicated.
Colombia asks for dialogue and convenes the UN Security Council
As part of its diplomatic strategy, the Colombian Government announced that, as a member of the United Nations Security Councilwill promote a session to analyze the situation in Venezuela.
Petro insisted that the country’s position is clear: dialogue, de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the conflictrejecting any unilateral military action that puts the civilian population at risk.
Petro’s new reaction to accusations and criticism
In the midst of the international controversy, President Gustavo Petro published a new message in which he responded to criticism and personal questions that arose after Maduro’s capture.
“I’m not worried at all. I have nothing to hide like others,” said the president, ensuring that his political career is not linked to crimes, mass graves, extrajudicial executions or links to drug trafficking structures.

Petro recalled that for more than a decade he dedicated himself to investigate and publicly denounce the relationships between sectors of political power and armed drug trafficking groupspointing out that these complaints were made in open and documented debates.
Likewise, he rejected any attempt to link him with criminal lists or structures and assured that he has no relationship with events that have increased poverty, hunger or violence in the country.
“I am not afraid of injustice. Injustice against a human being exalts him,” the president concluded in his statement.
Concern for the civilian population and regional stability
The president also reiterated his concern about the explosions recorded in Caracas before Maduro’s capture and rejected any action that aggravates the humanitarian situation.
Preventively, the National Government activated measures to protect the civilian populationguarantee stability on the border and respond in a timely manner to possible humanitarian or migratory emergenciesin coordination with local authorities and international organizations.
