Trinidad and Tobago affirms that it did not participate in the US attack against Venezuela

Kamla Persad-Bissessar ministra Trinidad y Tobago

The prime minister said that Trinidad and Tobago “continues to maintain peaceful relations with the people of Venezuela”

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, He assured this Saturday that his country did not participate in the United States military operation against Venezuela, which included the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“Trinidad and Tobago did not participate in any of the military operations that the United States has carried out in Venezuela,” Persad-Bissessar stated in his X account.

He added that Trinidad and Tobago “continues to maintain peaceful relations with the people of Venezuela.”

Although Persad-Bissessar rejected that his country supported the United States in the attack in the early hours of today, his Government has allowed US military exercises on its coasts since October last year to supposedly carry out operations against drug trafficking.

To this end, since September, President Donald Trump’s administration has deployed warships, fighter planes and thousands of soldiers to the Caribbean, bombing more than twenty drug boats, leaving at least 80 dead.

Among the ships that the United States sent to Trinidad and Tobago was the US Navy destroyer USS Gravely.

The small Caribbean country is located very close to Venezuela: the island of Trinidad is just eleven kilometers from the Venezuelan coast at its closest point.

In addition to the destroyer, the 22nd Expeditionary Unit of the US Marine Corps was also deployed.

Persad-Bissessar has publicly expressed his support for the United States for carrying out alleged anti-drug operations in Caribbean waters and thus maintaining the region as “a zone of peace.”
