MIAMI, United States. – A 46-year-old woman and her nine-year-old daughter died after being run over when they were crossing the Central Highway, near the Santa Clara bus terminal (Villa Clara), on the night of December 30, according to family reports on social networks.
CubaNet confirmed the incident with local sources in the city of Santa Clara, who were familiar with the events.
The mother, identified as Liliana Carbonell Cueto, died at the scene; The minor, Elisabet Isel Díaz Carbonell, was transferred to the city’s pediatric hospital and died a day later, according to the same sources.
Those close to him assure that the vehicle was driven by a Cuban resident in the United States who was visiting the Island and denounce that, until January 2, there had been no official information about the circumstances of the accident or the legal situation of the driver. The accusations that the driver was allegedly speeding and under the influence of alcohol have not been confirmed by any authority.
“Fly my angel, fly my daughter, do not stop, you are already in the arms of Father God, although you left your father and family destroyed by your departure, but proud of the daughter I had (…). You will always be in my heart, my Elisabet Isel, my darling. I will always miss you, my beautiful girl,” wrote on Facebook the father of the minor.
According to the same reports, the death of Liliana Carbonell also leaves two 17-year-old teenage children without their mother. Family and friends have publicly demanded a “serious” investigation and justice for both victims, while pointing out the lack of institutional information about the case as an aggravating factor.
Cuba has high road accident rates. Between January and August of last year were reported 502 deaths from traffic accidents. By 2024, the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) reported 7,511 accidents, 6,617 injuries and 636 deaths.
