Colombia continues to consolidate itself as a key country for the conservation of migratory birds.
In Punta Soldado, municipality of the Buenaventura district, last December 2025 the first Shore and Migratory Bird Festival was held, an event that united the community, students and environmental organizations around the care of biodiversity.
The day was marked by educational activities, cultural expressions and environmental awareness spaces, highlighting the importance of birds that migrate from North America and find in the Colombian Pacific a safe territory to rest, feed and continue their journey.

A bird festival that unites community, science and ancestral knowledge
The festival was developed with the leadership of the Calidris Association, in coordination with the environmental corporation, the Punta Soldado Community Council and the Jaime Ruc Educational Institution, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús headquarters. Thanks to this joint work, it was possible to integrate scientific knowledge with the ancestral knowledge of the community.

During the meeting, educational stations and recreational activities were installed, aimed especially at children and young people, who learned about the importance of shorebirds, their behavior, their habitat and the fundamental role they play in coastal ecosystems.
Environmental education to protect migratory birds in Colombia
One of the main objectives of the festival was to strengthen environmental education as a tool for conservation. Through staging, games and pedagogical dynamics, the community understood why it is essential to protect these territories that serve as a refuge for migratory birds.
The activities allowed us to recognize the natural wealth of Punta Soldado, a strategic ecosystem that guarantees food and security to the species during their long migratory journey.
Punta Soldado, a territory committed to conservation
The first Shore and Migratory Bird Festival reaffirmed Punta Soldado’s commitment to wildlife protection. The community not only preserves its environment, but also studies and values it as part of its identity and future.
