Rain of millions: Petroperú in loss, but pays juicy benefits to its workers

The delicate financial situation it is going through Petroperu has led the government of José Jerí to take measures to find a solution. Currently, the state company subsists thanks to the taxes of all Peruvians and if it is not stopped, the burden will be greater.

As of October 2025, Petroperu accumulated losses of US$ 481 million so far this year. In addition, as of December 2025, it had debts with suppliers for US$ 767 million. All of this occurs despite the fact that, between 2022 and 2024, the State disbursed S/ 17,888 million in financial support measures, a figure that exceeds the annual budgets of key sectors such as Health and Education.

In a context like this—in which any company should prioritize austerity—Petroperú continues to finance 83 types of work benefits and privileges, which represent 55% of personnel expenses. Several of these benefits are disconnected from the economic reality of the company.

These are some of the current labor benefits at the state oil company:

  • Double bonus in January: workers receive a special allowance of up to 100% of your salary and, additionally, an extraordinary allocation of up to 50% of your basic salary.

  • Vacation benefits: When a worker goes on vacation, he not only receives his usual remuneration, but also a vacation bonus equivalent to an additional full salary.

  • Food during vacations: The company covers the worker’s food even when he is on vacation, through a payment made by the corresponding concessionaire.

  • Schooling bonus: Petroperú finances the education of its workers’ children from the 3 up to 25 yearsincluding initial, primary and higher education.

  • Payment for home services: the expenses for light, water and taxes They are reimbursed to workers, according to rates and limits established in each operating unit (Talara, Pipeline, Selva Refining).

  • Automatic five-year bonus: workers receive a salary increase of 5% for every five years of permanence in the company, until reaching a 30% additional, without productivity evaluation or results.

This scenario explains the publicly expressed outrage by the then Minister of Economy and Finance, Jose Aristaas well as by the current head of the sector, Denise Miralleswho questioned the lack of transparency of the state oil company.

“It annoys me that there are ‘Arab sheiks’ employed by Petroperú, when we have a company that is making great efforts to survive. That annoys and I think it also annoys all Peruvians.”declared Arista a few days after taking office.

The former minister also questioned the extent of some benefits: “It cannot be that schooling benefits are given to the children of oil company employees until they are 27 years old”he remarked.
