Amnesty International demands the immediate release of Cuban political prisoner Sayli Navarro

Cuba, Sayli Navarro

The organization recognizes her as a prisoner of conscience and denounces that she was sentenced to eight years in prison for peacefully exercising her rights during the July 2021 protests.

MADRID, Spain.- Amnesty International claimed the immediate and unconditional release of the Cuban activist Sayli Navarro Álvarez, whom he considers a prisoner of conscience for his imprisonment after the protests of July 11, 2021 (11J) in Cuba.

In a publication released by Amnesty International Americas this week, the organization highlighted that Navarro is a co-founder of the opposition movement Ladies in White, made up of mothers, wives and daughters of the 75 dissidents arrested during the 2003 repressive wave known as the Black Spring. The activist was sentenced to eight years in prison for actions linked to the anti-government demonstrations of 11J.

Amnesty International recalled that Sayli Navarro was violently arrested on July 12, 2021 along with her father, political opponent Félix Navarro, when both were on their way to the Perico Police station, in the province of Matanzas. The objective was to request information about members of Ladies in White who had been arrested the day before during the protests.

The entity stressed that the activist has experienced the consequences of state repression from a very young age, due to the prolonged harassment against her father, and maintained that her imprisonment responds exclusively to the peaceful exercise of her rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

In its message, Amnesty International called to hold Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez accountable and to pressure for Navarro’s release.
