Rio’s New Year’s Eve cleanup generated 1,250 tons of trash collected by Comlurb, which ended the special mega-operation in the city this Thursday morning (1st). Of this total, 650 tons were taken from Copacabana. At the turn of 2025, the volume had been lower. On that occasion, 980 tons of waste were collected, 508 from Copacabana alone. In the special New Year’s Eve operation, the Rio Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) distributed 5,260 street cleaners to all points of the party organized by Rio’s city hall. “The number of containers, with 7 thousand pieces of equipment, 240 liters and high-capacity containers, 1,200 liters, was the largest ever,” Comlurb said in a note.

The company celebrated the fact that the population collaborated with the work of the street cleaners using containers strategically distributed along the Copacabana waterfront.

“He speeded up the cleaning service and ensured the delivery of sand from the beach and the lanes on Avenida Atlântica, released to the population shortly before 10am, with everything clean and deodorized”, he highlighted.

In the neighborhood alone, the service was carried out by 1,500 street cleaners who used 500 pieces of equipment and vehicles. For this Thursday’s movement on the beach, Comlurb maintained cleaning with the maintenance team until 5pm.

For the hydraulic cleaning of the roads, the scheme was the largest ever carried out in the capital, using 26 water tanks and 26 motor pumps with a high pressure system. “The Company operated with 440 vehicles and equipment, including compactor and dump trucks, sweepers, water tanks for washing the roads with reused water, mechanical shovels and beach tractors, in support of the street cleaners’ service”, he indicated.

Early in the morning, at 6am, the president of Comlurb, Jorge Arraes, was already following Operation Cleaning in Copacabana. Arraes was pleased that bathers could use the beach without trash in the morning. “Once again Comlurb shows the strength and commitment of its street cleaners to deliver a clean beach to the population and the lanes open before 10am”, he said in the note.

According to the Company’s president, there were no complications and the operational planning was strictly followed. “We are very happy with the result achieved so that beachgoers can enjoy the beach this holiday,” he commented.
