Nicolás Maduro assured that “fake news” about Venezuela is being spread in the United States, in a context marked by the military deployment of Washington’s Aeronaval in the Caribbean and the increase in tensions between both countries.

During an opening ceremony of the International Women’s Leadership School, broadcast by VTV, the president assured that the image projected of the country in the American media does not correspond to reality. However, he did not deny specific information.

«Everything they say is a lie. “You on the networks, women, in Spanish, in English, in Wayúu, can break the veto and censorship that the United States media has at this time regarding the truth about Venezuela,” said Maduro.

In his speech, the president reiterated that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces “shot down” on Monday nine aircraft allegedly linked to drug trafficking in the state of Amazonas, a border region with Brazil and Colombia.

«Who did it? The FANB, vigilant and frowning, wearing their permanent campaign boots. “Venezuela is very well cared for and protected,” said Maduro, who also highlighted the role of women as “the greatest force” in the country.

Since August, the United States has maintained a military deployment in the Caribbean, near Venezuelan waters, which — according to Washington — seeks to combat drug trafficking. Caracas, on the other hand, interprets this military presence as a threat and an attempt to bring about a regime change.

President Donald Trump’s government accuses Maduro of leading the so-called Cartel of the Suns, an alleged criminal organization that it blames for introducing drugs into US territory. The Venezuelan Executive has repeatedly denied the existence of said structure and rejects the accusations.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content is being published taking into consideration the threats and limits that have consequently been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
