The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, denied this Wednesday morning (31) the request from former president Jair Bolsonaro’s defense to receive his father-in-law, Vicente Reinaldo, at the private DF Star hospital, in Brasília, where he has been admitted since Christmas Eve to undergo surgical procedures. The visit request from Michelle Bolsonaro’s father was presented to the STF this Tuesday (30).
Last week, the former president was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to leave the Federal Police Superintendency, in Brasília, where he is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for condemning the plot of the attempted coup d’état.
In the decision published this morning, the minister justified why the prisoner cannot receive extra visits, even though he is in a hospital, and not in a prison unit, which creates an exceptional custody regime. The reason is the “need to ensure safety and discipline”.
“In this specific case, the prisoner is admitted to a hospital unit, a circumstance that imposes an exceptional custody regime, different from that existing in a prison establishment, subject to the rules specific to the hospital environment and medical guidelines. Therefore, given the exceptional circumstances of hospitalization, the need to guarantee safety and discipline, I reject the request made.”
Admitted to the DF Star Hospital since Wednesday last week, the former president underwent surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia and also performed three other procedures to try to contain persistent bouts of hiccups, by blocking the phrenic nerve – responsible for controlling the diaphragm, the muscle that acts on breathing.
Authorized visits
In a decision dated December 24, Minister Moraes already authorized the hospitalization and visits of all five of the former president’s children, as long as the general rules established by the DF Star Hospital for all patients were observed and with the express prohibition of computers, cell phones or any electronic devices entering the hospital room.
The minister also authorized former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro to remain in the hospital as Jair Bolsonaro’s companion during the entire period of hospitalization, for her spouse’s surgical recovery.
The latest medical bulletin, early Tuesday evening, does not mention an expected discharge date for the former president, who remains in post-operative care.
