Despite having no convictions, the presidential candidate still remains in hiding because a 24-month preventive detention order remains in force. Recently, the Judiciary rejected the variation request presented by his defense and ordered that the leader of Peru Libre continue facing his process from clandestinity.
The tax investigation against Cerrón maintains that he allegedly received and moved money of illicit origin through operations linked to his party. According to the Public Ministry, these funds would come from acts of corruption committed in the Regional Government of Junín when he was governor.
Despite his status as a fugitive, the former official uses his social networks to proselytize politically and attack his opponents. Peruvian justice maintains an international arrest warrant and offers a financial reward for information that facilitates his exact location.
Now, after the admission of the plate, a period of three days opens where the JEE can receive any objection against this candidacy. If the objection is declared founded, the candidate is excluded from the 2026 general elections, unless the Plenary of the JNE revokes the decision in a second instance.
