During the hearing this Tuesday, the judge determined to impose the precautionary measure of house arrest for one year for Rafael León, while the investigations are carried out.
“Upon evaluating the data presented by this Prosecutor’s Office and taking into account the provisions of article 316 of the National Code of Criminal Procedures, it issued the order to link the case solely and exclusively for the crimes of concealment for favor and against public security institutions,” said the state prosecutor.
The official assured that freedom of expression and the exercise of freedom of the press are respected in Veracruz.
Hours earlier, Rocío Nahle, governor of Veracruz, assured that there is no terrorism in her entity or any other in Mexico, despite the fact that journalist Rafael León Segovia had been accused of that crime.
“I cannot give an opinion right now, until the linking process passes, and the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary give their opinion (…) No, there is no terrorism but we must review the Penal Code of Veracruz,” the president expressed to the media.
President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out this week that an accusation of terrorism had never been made in Mexico.
The arrest of journalist Rafael, initially charged by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Veracruz as allegedly responsible for the crimes of terrorism, cover-up by favoring and crimes against public security institutions, was condemned by the organization Article 19.
On the morning of Wednesday, December 24, the journalist known as Latifa León, dedicated to covering security issues in the entity, was arrested during an operation in which agents of the Ministerial Police and elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) participated.
