With a persistent bout of hiccups, Bolsonaro undergoes new surgery

Former president Jair Bolsonaro returned to the operating room this Tuesday afternoon (30), after experiencing a new bout of hiccups. The intervention takes place one day after the former president undergo the same procedure to block the phrenic nerve – responsible for controlling the diaphragm, the muscle that acts on breathing. The information was initially released by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, in a post on social media. With a persistent bout of hiccups, Bolsonaro undergoes new surgery

“My love developed hiccups at 10 am, which have not stopped until now. Given this, the medical team opted to perform a reinforcement of the phrenic nerve block,” wrote the former president’s wife, in a publication posted around 2 pm.

Earlier in the evening, a new medical bulletin was released by the DF Star Hospital, where the former president is hospitalized. According to the text, Bolsonaro continues to undergo post-operative care following inguinal hernia surgery, which was carried out last week. Doctors confirm that the anesthetic blockade of bilateral phrenic nerves has been completed after a new bout of hiccups and recommend that a new examination be carried out.

“He should undergo an upper digestive endoscopy, tomorrow (31), to evaluate gastroesophageal reflux. He continues with respiratory physiotherapy, CPAP therapy [aparelho para tratar apneia do sono] night shift and preventive measures for thrombosis”, says the note.

The bulletin is signed by doctors Claudio Birolini (general surgeon), Leandro Echenique (cardiologist), Brasil Caiado (cardiologist), Mateus Saldanha (interventional radiologist), Lauro Bogniotti (anesthesiologist) and Allisson B. Barcelos Borges (general director of the hospital).

This is Bolsonaro’s third surgical procedure to block the phrenic nerve and try to contain hiccups. Previously, he had already undergone the operation on Saturday (27), on the right side, and yesterday (29), on the left side.

In a previous statement, doctors predicted that the former president would remain hospitalized at least until Thursday (January 1).

Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to the DF Star Hospital since December 24th. He was subjected, on Christmas Day, to a inguinal hernia surgery.

The former president was authorized by minister Alexandre de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to leave the Federal Police Superintendency, in Brasília, where he is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for being convicted of the coup plot.
