The Paraguayan president Santiago Peña assured that he would “love to see a peaceful solution to this conflict” in relation to the tensions between the United States and Venezuela. He stated that, if there is no peaceful resolution, “a military incursion is going to happen.”
The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, said this Tuesday, December 30, that he is “very concerned” about the increase in tension between the United States and Venezuela, while advocating for a peaceful solution to prevent a military incursion into the country.
“I am very concerned, and I have conveyed to the American Government our concern about a military incursion,” said Peña, in response to a question about the situation in Venezuela, during a press conference at the presidential house in Asunción.
“I wish that would not happen,” added Peña, whose Government does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as president, after the questioned Venezuelan presidential elections of 2024. Since January, diplomatic relations between both countries have been suspended.
Since last August, the United States has maintained an air-naval deployment in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific with the aim of combating drug trafficking. The Maduro administration has said that they are “threats” to promote a regime change.
In this sense, Peña reiterated the Donald Trump government’s accusations that Maduro leads the Cartel of the Suns, an organization that the United States recently declared terrorist and is responsible for “flooding” the country’s streets with drugs.
Paraguay declared last August to the Cartel of the Suns as an “international terrorist organization.”
Tensions between the US and Venezuela have escalated in recent weeks after Trump ordered a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers moving to and from the country, in addition to the US president’s recent announcement of an attack on a dock within Venezuelan territory supposedly used for drug trafficking.
Without specifically referring to this, Peña asserted that the United States is “reviving the old Monroe Doctrine,” which he described as a policy that designates the Western Hemisphere as the “area of influence” of the North American country and in which, he assured, “he made it very clear” that “his main rival is China.”
“So, I think that in that logic they are implementing their strategy,” said the president, alluding to the document released by the Trump Government, under the title “National Security Strategy.”
“We would love for a peaceful solution to be found to this conflict, but if there is no peaceful solution, I have no doubt that a military incursion is going to be what is going to happen,” added Peña, in his analysis of the situation with Venezuela.
