“The last day of the year will be winter in the western half of Cuba,” according to INSMET

El cuarto frente frío de la actual temporada invernal se aproxima al occidente de Cuba

“It is possible” that residents in the western part of the Island will experience “the lowest temperatures so far this season,” said the scientific institution.

MIAMI, United States. – A cold front that will advance over western Cuba between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning could mark the most notable drop in temperatures recorded so far in the current winter season, according to estimates by specialists from the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET), which warns of a “winter” end of the year in much of the western region.

“The last day of the year will be wintery in the western half of Cuba. It is possible that we will experience the lowest temperatures so far this season,” INSMET noted in a publication spread on its official channels.

According to the information, the frontal system will arrive weakened and with associated “scarce” rains, although the agency foresees an increase in the probability of rainfall when the front reaches the archipelago. After its passage, high pressures of continental origin will begin to influence, a pattern that usually reinforces the northerly winds and raises the waves on the western north coast.

INSMET meteorologists indicated that the cold air mass associated with this scenario will significantly lower maximum temperatures during December 31. However, for January 1 they anticipate more stable conditions, with a “dry and clear skies” dawn and a fresh sensation due to the predominance of the northerly flow.

The INSMET warning comes after a recent episode of significant rains in the north of the country. In mid-December, a weakened almost stationary cold front and the influence of an anticyclone generated significant accumulations, with the highest records in the central region: in Seibabo, Yaguajay municipality (Sancti Spíritus), 226 millimeters were reported during the early morning hours; In addition, 82.2 millimeters were measured in Sagua la Grande (Villa Clara) and 59.0 millimeters in Varadero (Matanzas), according to reports cited from the network of meteorological stations.

The national record for minimum temperature in Cuba continues to be 0.6 degrees Celsius, recorded on February 18, 1996 in Bainoa, today the province of Mayabeque, according to specialized publications and press reports.
