Arequipa: Tourism in Castilla takes off

Tourism activity in the province of Castilla could be greater with the execution of the Local Tourism Development Plan (PDTL) 2025-2030, an instrument that will allow the growth of the activity to be organized, guarantee sustainability and open new economic opportunities for the population.

This instrument aims to position the province in the national and international tourism market by highlighting its attractions, including the Toro Muerto petroglyphsconsidered one of the largest rock art complexes in the world.

ATTRACTIONS

It is an archaeological site that is considered one of the repositories with largest rock art in the world. It is located in the central part of the Majes River valley, in the Uraca-Corire district (Province of Castilla, Arequipa Region) in the coastal area of ​​the extreme south of Peru. It has been possible to count thousands of volcanic rocksdispersed between 400 and 1500 meters above sea level. A large part of them is decorated with petroglyphs made by representatives of different local and pan-regional cultures (probably dating from the beginning of our era until the arrival of the Incas).

They are not left behind wine and pisco winerieswhich keep the Arequipa wine tradition alive; the dinosaurs from the Querulpa sectorwhich attract visitors of all ages; and a varied gastronomy, which reflects the cultural richness of the area.

This plan was managed by the Regional Government of Arequipathrough the Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism (GRCETUR), together with the Provincial Municipality of Castilla in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR).

Recently, it was approved and with this, it becomes possible avoid improvisation, promote the conservation of natural and cultural heritageand generate local employment. In addition, it is articulated with the Regional Tourism Development Plan (PDRT) of Arequipa and the National Strategic Tourism Plan (PENTUR), ensuring integrated and sustainable management.

The Regional Government and MINCETUR reaffirmed their commitment to continue providing technical assistance and training for local governments, consolidating tourism as an engine of inclusive and sustainable development in Arequipa and the country.
