A cold front that will advance over western Cuba between tonight and the early hours of the 31st could leave the lowest temperatures recorded so far in the season.
According to estimates by specialists from the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet), the arrival of the fourth front of the season predicts a wintery end of the year for a large part of the western territory.
“The last day of the year will be wintery in the western half of Cuba. It is possible that we will experience the lowest temperatures so far this season,” the organization notes.
Although the system will arrive weakened and the associated rains will be scarce, the probabilities of precipitation in the region will increase once the front reaches the archipelago, as reported by Insmet on its official channels.
After the front passes, high pressures of continental origin will begin to influence, which will cause stronger winds from the north and an increase in waves on the western north coast.
Meteorologists point out that the cold air mass associated with this pattern will significantly lower maximum temperatures during December 31.
However, the start of 2026 will be marked by more stable conditions, as forecasts point to a dry dawn with clear skies on January 1, accompanied by a cool sensation due to the predominance of northerly winds.
In the middle of this month, another weakened nearly stationary cold front and the influence of an anticyclone from the United States caused significant rains in areas of northern Cuba, with significant accumulations in locations in the center of the country.
The largest accumulated were concentrated in the central region. In the town of Ceibabo, Yaguajay municipality, Sancti Spíritus province, 226 millimeters of rain were reported during the early morning hours, the most relevant record of the event. Other important measurements included 82.2 millimeters in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara, and 59.0 millimeters in Varadero, Matanzas.
The record for minimum temperature in Cuba dates back almost 30 years. It is 0.6 degrees Celsius and was established on February 18, 1996, in Bainoa, in the current province of Mayabeque.
