Monday in the capital of Rio de Janeiro was marked by extreme heat and by high air humiditywith increased cloudiness throughout the day. The maximum temperature recorded in the city was 35.6 degrees Celsius (ºC), in Vila Militaraccording to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The minimum, of 21.1 ºC, was recorded at 2 am, in the Jacarepaguá neighborhood, in the southwest zone of the city. According to meteorology, rapid rain showers are expected this evening in isolated areas of the city.

For this Tuesday (30), the Rio Alert System forecast is for partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers during the afternoon and evening. The maximum temperature should be around 36 ºC.
On Wednesday (31), New Year’s Eve, the forecast will not change much. The sky will be partly cloudy to cloudy with light showers in the late afternoon and evening. The wind will blow in a southeasterly direction, and the maximum temperature is expected to be 37 ºC.
THE extreme heat in Rio it is due to a mass of hot and persistent air in the Southeast and Central-West regions of the country. The main factor for the persistence of heat is a high pressure system in the middle levels of the atmosphere that acts as a barrier, inhibiting the formation and advancement of cold fronts and areas of instability towards the interior of the country.
