The Minister of Economy and FinanceDenisse Miralles, assured that, in the coming days, the Executive will approve an emergency decree in which the fiscal blunder of the last five years in Petroperú will end, by establishing the measures for the comprehensive restructuring of the company.
Miralles’ statements test both his credibility and that of José Jerí’s transitional government to provide a solution to the increasing payments that the Treasury has been disbursing each month to honor the oil company’s debts. According to Miralles herself, to date, the State in its capacity as guarantor of Petroperú’s debts has spent more than S/17,000 million.
“What we want to do is precisely start a serious process of support for the company and you will see the details in the emergency decree that we are approving these days. On the 29th and 30th, which is tomorrow and the day after, we must be convening a Council of Ministers so that the ministers can approve this device and have the comprehensive solution there,” he declared.
The minister’s contradictions
However, the Minister of Economy’s statements about stopping Petroperú’s fiscal blunder collide with her claims that the measures “will not affect the social benefits of workers,” when they are also part of the problem.
In September of last year, just a few days after his appointment, the Minister of Economy, José Arista, had revealed that Petroperú workers have more than 33 benefits from union negotiationswhich put more burden on the company, despite the financial deterioration it presents.
Arista, at that time, said he was outraged because it could not be that the oil company grants schooling benefits to employees’ children up to the age of 27.
“It annoys me that there are ‘Arab sheikhs’ employed by Petroperú, when we have a company that is making great efforts to survive. That annoys and I think it also annoys all Peruvians,” Arista stressed.
“It is not enough to continue injecting resources, transferring them to pay debts is not sustainable. We have to safeguard the assets of the State and I also want to give peace of mind to the workers because there will be respect for social benefits,” Miralles mentioned.
The head of the MEF pointed out that there will not be any shortages in areas where Petroperú provides energy security services.
“There are mechanisms such as projects in assets that the State does not sell, but rather add value for a private sector to develop, make an investment and generate revenue for the State as well. Petroperú has very important assets that can be used with these mechanisms,” said Miralles.
