The Government of Venezuela expressed its strong rejection of the recent announcement by the United States to carry out the massive sale of weapons to Taiwan.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, faithful to the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law, firmly and categorically rejects the dangerous announcement by the Government of the United States of America to carry out large-scale arms sales to Taiwan,” says the text released by Foreign Minister Yván Gil, on his Telegram channel.
Venezuela reiterates that “this unilateral action constitutes serious interference in the internal affairs of the People’s Republic of China and a flagrant violation of the international commitments assumed by Washington.”
Likewise, he specified that the decision of the US Government “directly attacks the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, undermines strategic stability and represents a blatant threat that puts peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region at risk.”
The US violates the one-China principle
The announcement made by the Donald Trump Administration has been questioned by the Chinese Government on the grounds that it threatens the sovereignty and integrity of the Asian giant, and also violates the “one China” principle.
The US State Department announced on December 17 a proposal that includes eight agreements to sell weapons and military equipment to Taiwan for a value of 11.1 billion dollars.
In this regard, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Defense, Zhang Xiaogang, stated that the United States is breaking its word by intensifying arms sales and violating its official commitment to Taiwan, by try to accelerate the threat of war in the strait.
For his part, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, denounced that such supplies send wrong signals to the separatist forces in Taiwan and fuel external military agendas.
Deterrence exercises
This Monday, China’s Eastern Theater Command began large-scale military exercises near Taiwan, with the aim of “testing troops’ ability to carry out precision strikes against key targets,” reported command spokesman Shi Yi.
As explained by the spokesperson, the ‘Mission Justice 2025’ maneuvers will focus on combat readiness patrols in the air and at sea, obtaining joint superiority, as well as the blockade of ports, key areas and multidimensional deterrence in the region.
