Avalanches in Nariño leave two dead and force 15 families to evacuate

The municipal mayor indicated that the families must be permanently relocated.

The emergency caused by two avalanches in a rural area of ​​the municipality of Saint Paulin the north of Nariñoforced the preventive evacuation of at least 15 families.

The landslides resulted in the death of one 11 year old boy and his father, in addition to serious damage to several homes in the sector.

The mayor of San Pablo, Mario Trujilloexplained that the first landslide directly impacted a home, causing the tragedy, and that minutes later a second avalanche occurred on the same path, which generated panic among the community.

“There were two landslides in the same area; one directly affected a home where two people died, and the other caused anxiety in around 15 families”explained the local leader.

Likewise, the president pointed out that with the support of the Fire brigade and the Civil defensethe authorities carried out rescue, evacuation and humanitarian care work.

The affected families were temporarily relocated to rentals while the emergency is overcome.

For this reason, the mayor announced that efforts are already being made before the Nariño Governorate and the National Unit for Risk Management in order to achieve the definitive relocation of the families, due to the high risk that the area represents.

“This situation leads us to take immediate steps with the Government of Nariño and the National Risk Management Unit to seek the definitive relocation of the families because the 15 homes are in danger, it is an area with a lot of water flow, which increases the difficulty”he added.

It should be noted that the emergency occurs in the middle of the second rainy season that affects the southwest of the country and keeps several regions on alert due to the risk of landslides and avalanches.
