From biblical drama to popular tradition

Although today April Fool’s Day is celebrated with laughter, its origin is deeply religious. The date remembers the biblical episode narrated in the Gospel of Saint Matthew, when the king Herod He ordered the slaughter of children under two years of age in Bethlehem upon learning of the birth of Jesus, whom he saw as a threat to his power. These children were called “Holy Innocents”, and the Church recognized them as martyrs.

For centuries it was a day of meditation and sadness. But, as often happens with traditions, time completely transformed it.

As the years passed, the religious commemoration fadede mixing with popular medieval celebrations in which, for one day, everything was reversed: the children ruled, the apprentices made fun of the teachers and authority relaxed. That temporary freedom gave way to jokes, games and small pranks.

Thus, what began as a day of mourning ended becoming a party full of mischief, laughter and popular creativity.
