Antonio Gershenson: Natural and social resources to the rescue

AND

In the last 7 years we have seen changes in various areas of our economy and in other sectors. We have improvements in the transportation system, new trains, hospitals, universities, roads and highways. And, thus, we could list in a long list everything that is being built from the last six-year term to the current one. And, of course, they are advances that right-wing groups do not recognize.

We must mention that, during the past government and the current one, both progressive, the rescue of our natural resources has been evident. It is important to mention that it has also been the social resources that have been recovered and are serving the Transformation project.

Both natural and social are resources that have been abundant in the country, but that were irresponsibly wasted and overexploited during the previous six-year periods, especially in the neoliberal ones.

And it is not about constantly resorting to the past to compare – deceitfully – the system of government that we suffered for 36 years, and that now, thanks to the collective efforts of both the government and society itself, we are recovering.

We are a society deeply hurt in every sense, hence the importance of continuing to rescue, without concessions, not only economic resources, but also social ones. Getting out of backwardness is not an easy thing and, much less so, if we do not have the support of an important sector of the population that continues to believe that they are the most important and privileged part of our society. We are talking about the so-called national right, which, by the way, is so equal to the other rights in America that they seem like kindred spirits.

Whether they recognize it or not, we have begun a new stage in the reconstruction of the country. Of course, it would be more visible, credible and very exciting if the prices of food and other products and goods were reduced so that wage increases have the necessary positive effect. We want and need to get out, once and for all, of the other poverty, cultural, educational and political. We continue in search of a dignified life.

If the price of gasoline were the same as in Venezuela, life would speed up, ticket prices for all means of transportation would be reduced, wealth would be distributed more quickly and equitably. And consequently, people could move more safely and would achieve their objectives and life goals in a shorter period and with less physical and mental wear and tear. Furthermore, the economic gap would decrease, since the population in general would benefit, regardless of the ideology that each person has.

By the way, a liter of Venezuelan gasoline costs less than one Mexican peso. Its current price is around 0.72 to 0.84 Mexican pesos, at least until the beginning of 2025. The abundance of hydrocarbons allows the Bolivarian government to maintain the Sistema Patria program, in which coupons for subsidized gasoline are distributed nationwide. It is one of the cheapest in the world, since a liter, in national currency, costs around 0.84 bolivars and approximately 0.035 dollars.

If American raids in the buccaneer style of the 17th century continue, it will surely have an impact on the price of a barrel of oil. However, Venezuelan gasoline will continue to be among the least expensive in the world.

We consider that Pemex, if it continues with the reorganization and purging of its personnel, could already be in the possibility of designing a gasoline subsidy program. We need it urgently, before the importance and significance of increases in the minimum wage are diluted. If this subsidy were possible, we can be sure that our salaries would cover all our needs and we would not have to live, practically from day to day, as American society currently lives. Who would have thought, but that’s capitalism, especially when a country like the United States is slowly suffocated by debt. The population of that nation is experiencing one of the worst chapters in its history thanks to the terrible ruler they suffer from.

Since Andrés Manuel López Obrador, together with his work team, made the decision to rescue the country’s natural resources, we knew that the conflicts between social classes would worsen. The population in favor of neoliberalism entered into a psychological, ideological and economic shock, with the proposal of national regeneration. And the conflicts of interest came to light, the corruption in strategic sectors, such as energy, the structural mafias and the betrayals of the country. Because, selling the country’s natural and social resources, no one doubts it, is a crime, it is a clear betrayal of the country.

However, after more than 14 years of attacks and destructive criticism by the right-wing PRI, PAN and others, the nation project and the progressive Morena governments are advancing, step by step. The second floor of the 4T is still standing and walking. The Transformation is consolidated. There is still a lot to do, no one said otherwise.
