Ferry Perseverancia will resume the Gerona-Batabanó route after a delay in repair

Ferry Perseverancia

Perseverancia began providing services on August 20, 2023, and continued intermittently until October 3, 2025.

LIMA, Peru – The Perseverancia ferry arrived this weekend at the Isla de la Juventud, a place from where it will soon rejoin traffic between Gerona-Batabanó once the necessary technical inspections and adjustments of the vessel are completed.

The Port Maritime Transport Business Group (GEMAR) and the shipping company Prácticos de Cuba reported that the planned repair of the Perseverancia concluded on December 24, after the vessel successfully completed the dock and sea tests.

The information was posted on Facebook by the Minister of Transportation in Cuba, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, who acknowledged that the technical process included the stranding of the ferry in the dry dock of the Caribbean Drydock Company (CDC SA) shipyard in Havana Bay, between October 7 and December 25, 2025, ten days longer than planned due to unforeseen events that arose in the process.

“More than 50 technical tasks included in the repair and maintenance plan were carried out to recover its technical condition with respect to the state in which it arrived at that shipyard,” said the minister.

Among the tasks carried out, the official highlighted the replacement of propellers and elements of the steering system and axle lines, restoration of the diesel-generator cooling system, cleaning of the hull and replacement of the anodic protection system, maintenance of electrical systems, installation of an emergency power plant, painting of the boat and replacement of the mooring lines and communication equipment.

Likewise, Rodríguez Dávila reported on the installation of a nursing facility, the construction of a staircase that improves access for people with special abilities, repair of the air conditioning and cold water supply systems in the passenger lounges, among other tasks.

According to official figures shared, supplies worth more than 550,000 euros were contracted for the repair of Perseverancia, financed by the GEMAR economic scheme and the country, which ensured this work and spare parts for the period of the next six months.

This boat began provide services on August 20, 2023, and continued intermittently until October 3, 2025, the date on which it made its last trip before stopping for repair.

In that period, the Perseverancia made some 716 trips, transported 297,904 passengers and 82,311 tons of cargo. “Figures that demonstrate the essential role of their role in transportation” on the Isle of Youth, the minister stressed.
