Junín is the fourth region with the most deaths and injuries in accidents

More than 230 people died in the Junín region in the midst of violent traffic accidents and another 2,271 were injured during accidents on the streets and highways; This was confirmed by the National Road Safety Observatory in its latest preliminary report for 2025. The region has already exceeded 2,418 traffic accidents.

The report collects data from the PNP between January and October; However, it is estimated that the total figure will increase by the end of the year. Regarding the deaths, Junín is the fourth region with the most deaths on the roads with a total of 230 victims; Only Lima (442), Cusco (295) and Piura (243) surpass it.

Regarding the number of injured, Junín is also positioned as fourth, surpassed by Lima (18,866), La Libertad (2,693) and Arequipa (2,424).

The fatalities are mostly men (170); Of them, eight were minors. There are 60 female victims, of which five were minors. The most common accidents were collisions (1,083), run overs (451) and confusion (408).

Excessive speed is the main identified cause of traffic accidents with 23.53% (569 cases); This is followed by driver recklessness with 20.68% (500 cases), drunk driving with 4.18% (101 cases) and pedestrian recklessness with 2.07% (50 cases). Unspecified causes, environmental factors, mechanical failures and roads in poor condition make up the remaining percentage.

The regional director of Transportation and Communications, Michael Palacios, reported, for his part, that drunk driving and the lack of driver’s licenses are the main causes of accidents. He explained that the Central Highway is a critical road.

“It is the Central Highway that has had the greatest accidents and with the greatest fatal consequences. The cars go to Mantaro and the families suffer, that is the saddest thing”commented Palacios.

The Regional Road Safety Council also reports that it trained approximately 840 drivers and 5,673 road users in road safety through 29 awareness campaigns; Despite this, the Junín region continues to have unsafe streets and highways.
