The turn from 2025 to 2026 takes place next Thursday and brings with it several traditional New Year dates. In addition to New Year’s Eve and Universal Celebration Day (the first holiday of 2026 in Brazil), the beginning of the year serves as a milestone for implementing standards and rules.
January 1st marks 10 years since the implementation of the Portuguese Language Spelling Agreement. With the aim of unifying writing among countries that share the language, the change in rules was highlighted in articles at the time in Brazil Agency and in Reporter Brazil.

Just before the turn of the year, we have a centenary to celebrate. On the 31st, the most traditional Brazilian athletics event turns 100 years old. The São Silvestre International Race, held in São Paulo since 1925, completes a century of history this year. Still in 2025, today (28) we have the celebration of the first commercial exhibition of the cinematograph by the Lumière Brothers. To close the week, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of actress Maria Della Costa. She had her story told and was listed as one of the great ladies of Brazilian theater in the program Art with Sérgio Brittofrom the TV Brasilin 2011.
