Emergency backpack: so you can prepare to face a strong earthquake

The recent 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Chimbote was felt in different regions of the country and reminded the population that disasters do not warn. Therefore, having an emergency backpack ready at home can make a difference during an evacuation or in the first hours after a strong shock.

The Civil Defense authorities remember that this basic kit is part of the so-called “survival combo”, which also includes a reserve box. Both are designed to meet a family’s minimum needs while services are restored and help arrives.

What is the emergency backpack and what is it for?

The emergency backpack is an easy-to-transport bag that should accompany each family in case of evacuation. Its function is to allow people to survive during the first hours of an emergency, without depending on immediate external support.

It should be light, resistant and preferably waterproof, with several compartments that facilitate the organization of objects. The recommended weight should not exceed eight kilos so that it can be carried without difficulty.

What items should it contain?

This equipment must include basic products that cover health, food, hygiene and communication needs. Among the essential elements are:

  • Drinking water and non-perishable food
  • First aid kit
  • Battery-powered flashlight and radio
  • Replacement batteries
  • Cash
  • Copies of personal documents
  • Warm clothing and light blanket
  • Personal hygiene items

In addition, the backpack must adapt to each home. If there are babies, elderly people or patients with chronic diseases, diapers, formulas, medications or specific medical supplies should be included.

Authorities recommend checking the backpack periodically to verify expiration dates, food status, and equipment operation. Products must be renewed when necessary to ensure they are in usable condition.

In the current context, it is also suggested to incorporate biosafety items, such as masks, soap, alcohol gel or disinfectant solutions, especially in areas of high population concentration.

What is the reserve box and why is it important?

Unlike the backpack, the reserve box is designed to be used after the first day of the emergency. It should be stored in a safe place in the home and contain supplies for several days.

It is recommended to store more water, non-perishable food, additional clothing, cleaning products, basic utensils and other items that help sustain the routine while basic services are restored.

Earthquakes and other natural disasters can occur at any time. Having an emergency backpack ready and an organized reserve box allows you to respond quickly, reduce risk and protect the family in critical situations.

Prevention does not prevent the movements of nature, but it does allow us to face them with greater security and less improvisation. In a highly seismic country like Peru, being prepared is not an option: it is a necessity.
