Moraes orders the arrest of defendants in the coup plot

Moraes votes to convict 5 more defendants in the coup plot and acquit one

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered this Saturday (27) the house arrest of ten people convicted of the coup plot that occurred during the government of Jair Bolsonaro.Moraes orders the arrest of defendants in the coup plot

The list is made up of seven Army soldiers, a delegate from the Federal Police, the president of the Instituto Voto Legal, Carlos Cesar Moretzsohn Rocha, and Filipe Martins, former international affairs advisor to the ex-president.

They are all defendants in sections 2, 3 and 4 of the coup d’état charge and were convicted by the Court, but are free to appeal.

According to the decision, the accused must wear an electronic ankle bracelet and hand over their passports, in addition to being prohibited from having contact with other defendants and using social networks. Weapon possession was also suspended.

Decision

House arrests were ordered by Alexandre de Moraes to prevent further escapes. This Friday (26), the former director of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) Silvinei Vasques was detained in Paraguay, by local authorities, after fleeing Brazil and trying to board a flight to El Salvador with a false passport.

In Moraes’ understanding, there is a strategy for those convicted of coup acts to flee the country. The minister cited several cases of defendants escaping in the January 8th criminal proceedings, including that of former deputy Alexandre Ramagem.

“The modus operandi of the criminal organization condemned by the Federal Supreme Court indicates the possibility of planning and executing escapes outside the national territory, as done by defendant Alexandre Ramagem, including with the help of third parties”, argues the minister in the decision.
