Cena Musical pays homage to pianist Tenório Júnior, killed in Argentina

THE TV Brasil shows an unprecedented special edition of Music Scene this Saturday (27), at midnight, with a show in honor of pianist Francisco Tenório Júniordisappeared in March 1976, during the Argentine dictatorship, and killed in Operation Condor. On stage, the artists perform a repertoire of greatest hits: Female (Joyce Moreno), Samba da Benção (Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell), Fear of Love (Vinicius de Moraes), Mysteries (Joyce Moreno and Mauricio Maestro), Lullaby (Tenório Jr), Useless Landscape (Aloysio de Oliveira and Antonio Carlos Jobim), If I Want to Talk to God (Gilberto Gil), I’m Loco For You, America (Gilberto Gil and Capinan), The Nightingale (Gilberto Gil and Jorge Mautner), Cajuina (Caetano Veloso), My Voice, My Life (Caetano Veloso), You are beautiful (Caetano Veloso), Weekend in Eldorado (Johnny Alf) and Emoriô (João Donato and Gilberto Gil).

The show recorded by the public broadcaster was part of a cultural act in tribute to Tenório Júnior, with the participation of some of the biggest names in MPB. The act celebrated the memory and work of the Brazilian pianist and, through music, said “never again” to state violence.

The ceremony was attended by leaders of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo movements, from Argentina, and Marcha do Silêncio, from Uruguay, which bring together families of politically disappeared people in their countries. Vera Paiva, whose father, Rubens Paiva, was murdered by the State during the Brazilian dictatorship, and relatives of Tenório Júnior were also present at the cultural event.

THE The body of the Brazilian musician, a reference in samba-jazz and bossa nova, was only officially identified on September 13th this yearalmost five decades after the disappearance. Tenório Júnior was on tour with Toquinho and Vinícius, in Buenos Aires, when he was kidnapped, tortured and killed by the dictatorship.

About the program

Created in 2007, the Music Scene is a program of TV Brasil which brings new performances of our music to the public. Since 2017, the presentations have been recorded at the BNDES Cultural Space, in Rio de Janeiro. The weekly series features shows that reveal and celebrate the richness and diversity of Brazilian music.

This season is in charge of Bia Aparecida, singer, journalist and presenter at the station. In the new batch of episodes, the program showcases new performances by renowned names such as MPB4, Jards Macalé, Elba Ramalho, Francis Hime, Olivia Hime, Afrojazz, Orquestra Lunar, Pelados and Assucena.
