The Foreign Ministry reported that transit through the Aguas Verdes–Huaquillas international bridge continues normally, after Ecuador informed the Peruvian Government of its decision to maintain the Huaquillas Binational Border Attention Center as the only authorized border crossing between both countries.
In this sense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it maintains communication with its Ecuadorian counterpart in order to “adopt measures to manage the current situation and jointly reinforce the fight against transnational organized crime and the control of irregular migration”.
The statement from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry
The statement by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry came after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador announced, through its social networks, that the country will maintain a single border crossing with Colombia and Peru for “reasons of national security.”
In its statement, Ecuador indicated that the measure will come into force from this Wednesday, December 24, without detailing until when it will remain in force.
The Rumichaca National Border Attention Center, which links the province of Carchi with the department of Nariño, is the only border crossing authorized by Ecuador for transit to Colombia.
In the case of Peru, authorized transit is carried out through the Huaquillas Binational Border Assistance Center, which connects the Ecuadorian province of El Oro with the department of Tumbes.
