HOLY SUNDAY. — A total of 63 traffic accidents and six people dead This is the preliminary balance recorded after the celebration of Christmas Eve, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported this Thursday in its second bulletin of the “Conscience for Life” operation.
The deputy director of the COE, José Luis German Mejía warned that the figure shows reckless behavior on the roads. “ The majority of these accidents involve motorcycles, which remains our biggest concern ”, he stated during a press conference.
Of the total accidents, 48 involved motorcycles 12 light vehicles and three were run overs while deaths occurred one inside the road safety device and five outside it . “ Three of the deceased were traveling on motorcycles and three in light vehicles. ”, said Germán Mejía.
The official also warned about the impact of alcohol consumption on accidents. The COE reported 131 people intoxicated by alcohol among them nine minors aged between 3 and 17 years, as well as 34 cases of poisoning food . “ These figures reflect a lack of responsibility that ends in tragedy ”, he stressed.
The provinces with the highest number of incidents were San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, National District, San Pedro de Macorís, Duarte and Sánchez Ramírez .
Within the framework of the operation, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) inspected 7,968 public transport units at 158 stops and interurban routes, and applied 321 doping tests of which six were positive .
Likewise, the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett) reported 8,297 audits with emphasis on motorcyclist violations for riding without helmets, as well as vehicle detentions and miles of road assistance.
“ We urgently call for caution. Each number represents a life, a family affected ”Germán Mejía emphasized, urging the population to respect traffic rules during the rest of the festivities.
