The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a statement this Wednesday, December 24, in which it referred to the blockade imposed by the United States on Venezuelan oil tankers, denouncing the illegality of such action, which it recalled constitutes a violation of human rights.
The letter was published on the website of the main entity of the United Nations (UN) in charge of promoting and protecting all human rights in the world, and it reiterates that “no State has the right to impose unilateral sanctions through an armed blockade.”
The organization’s experts warned that these illegal, disproportionate and punitive measures have seriously affected the human rights of the Venezuelan people, the Telesur note states.
The text denounces that US aggression constitutes a crime under international law, subject to universal jurisdiction, which allows any State to prosecute those responsible.
Likewise, they recalled that a blockade represents an unlawful military action, according to Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, and that this type of action is expressly recognized as illegal armed aggression., according to the Definition of Aggression adopted by the General Assembly in 1974.
Independent experts from the United Nations (UN) also rejected the sanctions and naval piracy actions by the United States against Venezuela, which was reported by the Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, reported via Telegram.
It should be noted that on December 17, US President Donald Trump described the Government of Venezuela as a “foreign terrorist organization” and ordered a total blockade of sanctioned ships that transport oil to or from the South American country.
The main objective of all these maneuvers of the US Government is to subjugate the Venezuelan people and the Executive and illegitimately appropriate the nation’s natural resources, especially its oil, considered strategic for the country’s economy.
