Church advocates for peace: political conflicts and economic crisis cast a shadow over Christmas

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference advocated for authentic peace, above individual, ideological and partisan interests, based on “the humility of dialogue” and “respect for others.”

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) presented its Christmas message in which it noted that this time, characterized by peace and family unity, is “overshadowed” by political conflicts and social and economic problems faced by Venezuelans.

In its message, the Church called for authentic peace and social justice. He regretted the threats that take away peace of mind from Venezuelans.

The episcopate referred to the “warlike actions” near the Venezuelan coast that have resulted in loss of life and the presence of “foreign military power in international waters of the Caribbean Sea.”

The CEV also questioned speculation about “unconsummated events”, verbal violence and the predominant disqualification in political dynamics.

Another fact that overshadows the celebration of Christmas, the Church pointed out, is the deprivation of freedom for thinking differently politically than national and foreign citizens.

On the economic and social issue, the Episcopal Conference referred to the discrimination and criminalization of migrants; He highlighted the widespread impoverishment of the population suffering from rampant inflation and a disorganized economy, as well as the confiscations of natural resources and the imposition of new economic sanctions.

“All these realities generate concern and anguish in the majority of the population who see their tranquility and peace shattered in such a special time as December.”

Search for peace

The Church asked to reaffirm the value of peace. He pointed out that there is a lot of talk about peace, but little is practiced. “Some think that it is impossible to achieve it and propose other ways, with the risks of generating violence and injustices that make the people suffer,” he warned in his message.

He advocated for authentic peace, above individual, ideological and partisan interests based on “the humility of dialogue, respect for others and the permanent rejection of the systemic and repetitive lie that is so often maintained in political and economic structures.”

The Church expressed that peace can only be built if each person and State institutions fulfill their mission, “leaving aside unrealistic solutions and approaches that do not take everyone into account.”
