Marvel Studios has confirmed the return of Chris Evans ace Steve Rogers in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsdayfollowing the release of the first official trailer, both online and in theaters.
The trailer, presented alongside early screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ashreveals that the former Captain America will appear as the father of a baby. This twist has sparked debate among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The new chapter will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026marking the return of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.
In the trailer, Evans appears as Steve Rogers on a farm, shown riding a motorcycle and wearing his signature blue helmet. The clip conveys a calm and nostalgic atmosphere, accompanied by an instrumental version of the avengers theme. It ends with Rogers gazing at his newborn son and the announcement: “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday,” followed by a countdown to the release date.
Rogers’ last appearance was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgamewhere, after completing his mission to return the Infinity Stones, he decided to retire and pass his shield to Sam Wilsonplayed by Anthony Mackie. The character ultimately chose to reunite with Peggy Carter through the Quantum Realm’s time-travel technology, leaving behind his heroic mantle for a new generation.
The Avengers: Doomsday trailer has prompted questions about whether this version of Captain America is the same Steve Rogers, a variant, or an alternate version—and about the mysterious baby’s identity and possible powers.
Chris Evans’ return had been the subject of speculation since the conclusion of the avengers saga. In an interview with esquirethe actor previously denied rumors of a comeback.
“That’s not true,” he said about reports speculating on his return to the MCU. “I’ve stopped responding to that. No, happily retired,” Evans added during an interview ahead of Captain America: Brave New World.
Evans made a brief appearance in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, portraying the Human Torcha character he originally played in Fox’s Fantastic Four films.
The direction of Avengers: Doomsday will once again be handled by Joe and Anthony Russowho previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame.
On Instagram, the Russo brothers shared: “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us here. We were always going to come back to this…”—an apparent reference to Steve Rogers’ central role in the MCU.
