Given the increase in the price of wheat on the international market and the rise in the price of the input, the millers of La Paz will stop mixing the grain they process for the Food Production Support Company

(Emapa) with Argentine flour and will directly market the product in the national market.

This was reported by Juan Cachicatari, president of the National Confederation of Artisan Bakers, after participating in a meeting with industrial millers and representatives of Emapa.

Cachicatari explained that before the price increase, 10% of Emapa flour was mixed with flour from Argentina. Now that is going to be optimized. “100% of the flour will be national. In this way, speculation will not continue and the dependence on that foreign input will be cut off, ”said the leader.

The Federation of Artisan Bakers of La Paz determined last Monday to suspend the production of battle bread in that city and gave the Government a period of 15 days to expedite the importation of flour.

The decision was made due to the increase in the price of the input, which in two weeks went from Bs 170 to Bs 280 per quintal, due to the increase in wheat prices on a global scale due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Minister of Rural Development and Lands, Remmy Gonzales, reiterated yesterday that there is enough flour to supply the national market. He also asked the population “not to be surprised by the agio or speculation in some strategic products” of the family basket.

According to Cachicatari, yesterday’s agreement establishes that the millers sell flour directly to the national market.

La Paz mills are committed to delivering of the required volumes. The population has to be very calm, they are going to be supplied with bread”, he affirmed.

Cachicatari also announced that the bakery leadership will hold today “meetings with the Minister of Productive Development (Néstor Huanca), EMAPA and other ministers regarding the situation of Argentine flour.”

Lawsuits

“As (Huanca) is the head of Emapa, that we meet the requirements established within the agreement without delay and the quality of the flour, delivery logistics, details that interest us a lot,” said the leader.

After the announcement of the artisan bakers of La Paz, it was found that the bread is still present in the markets of La Paz, although in some sectors it lost weight.

In Santa Cruz, the bakery leadership met on Monday to evaluate the increase in costs and define the steps to be taken. This medium tried to communicate with Gualberto Condori, advisor to the Department of Consumer Defense, Control of Products and Services, and with the leader Carmen Terán, but none answered his cell phone.
