He Jorge Chavez International Airport reopened the old runway (Runway 16L-34R) with a new lighting system, making the terminal the first airport in Peru to operate with two runways 24 hours a day.
According to Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the airport operator, the new infrastructure will increase the airport’s operational capacity, reduce waiting times and improve the experience of airlines and passengers, strengthening national and international air connectivity.
“In this way, Jorge Chávez International Airport is prepared to meet future passenger demand, projected at 40 million annually for the new terminal,” LAP said in a statement.
The Minister of Transportation and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera, led the reopening ceremony.
“This work also responds to a long-term vision. It is a strategic investment in safety, reliability and sustainability designed to accompany the growth of air transport in the coming years and to consolidate Peru with a fully connected regional air hub,” said Prieto.
“We delivered a 100% rehabilitated runway, a work that will increase the capacity of aircraft movements at Jorge Chávez. Without a doubt an important milestone that places us at the forefront of many international airports that operate with more than one runway, hand in hand with strict safety and efficiency standards,” said Juan José Salmón, CEO of Lima Airport Partners (LAP).
The runway will be capable of serving all types of aircraft and its intervention included the resurfacing of more than 2,500 meters in length that will prolong the useful life of the pavement, signage, the adaptation and construction of new taxiways, a new fuel supply system, and works that optimize air operations.
These works are part of the concession contract between the Peruvian State and Lima Airport Partners (LAP).
New lighting system
Likewise, the lighting system on the old runway was renewed, in coordination with the Peruvian Airports and Commercial Aviation Corporation (Corpac). This modern system incorporates more than 2,200 state-of-the-art LED luminaires, which offer greater energy efficiency, lower operating costs and better visibility for aircraft.
The system has emergency electrical generation, which guarantees the continuity of operations at all times, complying with the highest international standards of aeronautical safety.
The MTC highlighted the unique contribution of the private sector, recognizing the collaborative work between LAP and Corpac to carry out this project that will contribute to the modernization of the country’s airport sector.
