Service sector declines 0.1% in January, says IBGE

The volume of services in Brazil fell by 0.1% from December 2021 to January this year. The fall came after two months on the rise, which accumulated a gain of 4.7% for the sector. The data, from the Monthly Service Survey (PMS), was released today (16) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).Service sector declines 0.1% in January, says IBGE

Despite the January result, the service sector is still 7% above the level of February 2020, that is, the pre-pandemic level of covid-19.

Services rose 9.5% compared to January 2021 and 12.2% in the 12-month period, according to data released today.

The sector’s nominal revenue decreased 1.6% compared to December 2021, but rose 15.3% compared to January last year and 16% in the 12-month period.

From December to January, three of the five activities surveyed had a drop in the volume of services: information and communication (-4.7%), services provided to families (-1.4%) and other services (-1.1% ).

On the other hand, two activities increased in the month: transport (1.4%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.6%).

The tourism activities index, which is also part of the PMS, grew 1.1% compared to December, the eighth positive rate in the last nine months, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 69.6%. Despite this, the tourism segment is still 9.7% below the pre-pandemic level.
