The prime minister noted that Venezuela “has been threatening to invade Guyana for years and since last June began making similar threats that Trinidad and Tobago is part of Venezuela.”

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, accused the Caribbean Community (Caricom) of aligning itself with Nicolás Maduro, whose Maduro administration “has imprisoned or murdered thousands of Venezuelans who oppose him,” she wrote on her account on the social network X on the night of December 21.

“Trinidad and Tobago does not want to be part of that alignment, we do not support the dictatorship or drug trafficking and we do not support Caricom in its farce of a peace zone.”

The prime minister pointed out that Venezuela “has been threatening to invade Guyana for years and since last June began making similar threats that Trinidad and Tobago is part of Venezuela.”

He questioned whether the Caribbean Community has chosen to support the administration of Nicolás Maduro and opined that “the false narrative of the peace zone” is designed “to make the US military leave the Caribbean region” and Maduro remain in power.

Tensions between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago worsened with the anti-narcotics operation ordered by the United States in the Caribbean Sea. The prime minister has expressed her support for US President Donald Trump in his actions.

Persad-Bissessar was declared “persona non grata” by the National Assembly, with a Chavista majority, due to her “warlike stance” against Venezuela.

“Venezuela loves the people of Trinidad and Tobago and has shown it repeatedly, but that is a despicable Government of Trinidad and Tobago, that is a rubbish Government of Trinidad and Tobago, that lady is allowing Trinidad and Tobago to be used as an aircraft carrier against Venezuela,” said the president of parliament, Jorge Rodríguez.
