Elections 2026: Pedro Castillo announces the candidacy of Antauro Humala to the Senate

The coup leader and convicted Pedro Castillo, announced from the Barbadillo prison the nomination of Antauro Igor Humala Tasso as a candidate for the Senate with the Together for Peru party, within the framework of the general elections scheduled for April 12, 2026.

Castillo maintained that Humala’s joining the Together for Peru bloc responds to a commitment to “recover the government of the people, democracy and the rule of law.” In his statement, the coup leader emphasized the importance of unity between various political forces that, in his vision, seek structural changes in the country.

The decision occurs in a context of intense political activity on the eve of the 2026 elections, in which the Executive Branch and the Congress of the Republic will be renewed. The alliances, candidacies and movements of political figures of various tendencies have generated a fragmented scenario, with more than 40 registered parties and multiple pacts in the process of being formed to compete for different legislative and executive positions.

Humala, who served a 19-year sentence for the murder of 4 police officers in the Andahuaylazo riot, could not run with his ANTAURO party because he was declared illegal by the Judiciary when his undemocratic behavior was reliably proven. Despite this, current electoral regulations allow you to run as a candidate if you are part of a list of another political party or alliance.

Castillo’s support for Humala’s nomination adds to the coup leader’s broader strategy to influence the 2026 electoral process, despite the fact that he himself cannot run for elected office due to legal disqualification resulting from the judicial proceedings against him.

The incorporation of Humala to the Together with the People alliance could influence the dynamics of the legislative campaign and position the candidate in a central role within the agenda of that political organization facing the polls, while the electoral scenario continues to evolve towards next year.
