The former president of the National Electoral Committee of Popular ActionCinthia Pajuelo, asked for guarantees for her life, in statements she offered after the national plenary session held today, after the ruling of the National Elections Jury (JNE) that declared their internal elections null and void and, therefore, excluded them from the 2026 electoral processes.
According to him, during the plenary session several militants asked the president of the party, Julio Chávez Chiong, to resign, but he did not accept.
Minutes later, Chávez himself confirmed that they asked him to step aside, but that he will not do so because “when the house is on fire the worst thing one can do is run.”
“Indeed, some people have asked for it, but who have they been? Some with whom we have competed internally or who have benefited from the fraud,” he said on Canal N.
He indicated that Pajuelo “changed the results (of the internal Popular Action elections) to favor Alfredo Barnechea,” and that he will have to assume the criminal responsibility that this implies.
He also stated that, unanimously, the party determined the vacancy of Alfredo Barnechea as president of the Popular Action government plan that “a year and a half ago, at my proposal, he was commissioned to make the plan, not only did he not do it but he has not presented himself to give his explanations.”
He said that now the group will focus on renewing its leadership at the national level and preparing for the regional and municipal elections in October 2026 “where we are going to participate.” Along the same lines, he said that the acciopopulist militants were not authorized to participate in the April general elections with other parties.
Both Pajuelo and Barnechea will face an internal disciplinary process, in which they will have to defend themselves, but which could culminate in the expulsion of both from Acción Popular.
